The New Arnstadt Castle is a baroque three-winged castle from the 18th century. Since 1909, it has housed the palace museum in perfectly restored baroque rooms displaying art treasures and furniture. The historic chandeliers are well preserved and worked with a light in the centre of the glass body. As the lighting level is too low in relation to the room, the luminaires had to be upgraded to make them more energy-efficient in keeping with their listed status without distorting their appearance. Our solution consists of six spotlights mounted on a base plate with the canopy of the historic luminaire in the centre. The light source in the glass bell is also replaced by an LED light source and fitted with a diffuse glass body, creating the impression that this light source illuminates the room, while the actual illumination of the room is realised by the spotlights on the base plate. In collaboration with a carpenter, a sample was built according to the plans of the lighting design office Lichtraum.
